We’ve been taught by society that the in order to lose weight we just have to eat less and move more.  And if we do the opposite, then we’ll gain weight.  

Well, if it was that easy, we wouldn’t be facing an epidemic of obesity and facing the awful epidemic of childhood obesity that is quickly surfacing faster than ever. 

So what is the true cause of weight gain and obesity?  Several factors contribute but one of the major culprits is insulin resistance. 

WHAT IS INSULIN RESISTANCE?

Think of it this way.  If you’ve been drinking coffee everyday for the past 10 years, chances are you’ll have built some resistance to the caffeine to where one cup of coffee does not have the same affect in your body as it did the first year you started drinking coffee.  Therefore, in order to keep getting the caffeine rush from the coffee, you need to drink more and more throughout the day. 

So when it comes to insulin here’s how it works.  In order for your body to break down the food you eat as energy, insulin is needed.  However, certain foods such as refined carbohydrates, refined sugars, and processed foods cause your body to increase your blood sugar which requires even more insulin to break that down as energy.  And when you keep consuming these foods, your body begins to build resistance to insulin because it needs more and more and more. 

WHY IS INSULIN SO IMPORTANT?

Insulin is the hormone that sets our body set weight thermostat.  Insulin controls how much your body weighs.  So in order to lose weight for good, you have to train your body to lower its body set weight thermostat. 

Think of a home thermostat for a second.  Let’s say it’s really hot.  Sure, you could open the windows and turn on the fans – that would make the house feel cool for a while.  But the real issue is that the home thermostat is set too high!  Which is why it’s hot.  So in order to cool the place down, all you have to do is turn it down. 

Same goes with weight loss.  Yes, all diets work.  Go on a diet (any diet) and you will lose weight.  But chances are that you’ll regain the weight within a short matter of time because your body has been programmed to weight a certain amount because of your insulin.
