6 Self Care Strategies to De-Stress and Re-Focus
Are you feeling overwhelmed? Irritated and on edge, maybe? You’re not alone! And the good news is that there are a few things you can do that will help you feel calm, focused and clear.
1 – Put on some headphones and listen to binaural beats
Whenever I start feeling on edge, anxious or overwhelmed I like to grab my wireless noise cancelling headphones and listen to some binaural beats on YouTube or other focus music on my Calm app. I have found that by doing this it immediately helps me come back to the present moment and get clarity around what I am actually able to do in that moment vs. getting overwhelmed. I sometimes also use them to distract my kids because they think I’m on a call – ha!
2 – Write morning pages
Morning pages is something I learned about while I was studying to receive my Health Coach certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
The idea of Morning Pages is that it helps you get out on paper all of the ideas, complaints, stressors and everything in between that is going around in your head.. But it’s something that you can do anytime of the day not only in the morning. However, when you make it a priority to write first thing in the morning, it sets you up for success (at least that’s been my experience). Some writing prompts for you: first, begin by writing down any memories you may have of your dreams, then write down 10 things you are grateful for from the previous day followed by then writing down whatever comes to mind for at least a page.
3 – Go for a walk outside
Dropping what you’re doing and simply closing the door behind you and going for a walk can be very powerful. Even if it’s only 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Not only will you be adding a little bit of exercise in to your day but perhaps you can catch some vitamin D by stepping outside.
4 – Look at a photo album that brings you joy
This one sounds weird, right? Try it and let me know how it goes. Usually, when I look at photo albums I remember how much I have to be grateful for and it is a great reminder of where I came from and what gives me purpose.
5 – Look at your annual goals
If you don’t write annual goals or intentions this might be a good time to start. I’ve found that whenever I’m feeling anxious or overwhelmed it’s because I’m trying to do too many things all at once. By re-visiting my goals and intentions, I’m reminded of what really matters to me. And this way, I can go back and consider where my attention needs to be.
6 – Hire a health coach!
One of the great things about being an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach is that we are trained to take a holistic approach to health and we focus on primary foods and secondary foods. Primary foods are what really make life worth living and bring joy and satisfaction to our life such as creativity, education, relationships and home environment, for example. Secondary foods are actually related to the foods we actually consume. They both matter. Click here to apply to work with me
