Is your job making you mentally, physically & emotionally sick?

According to Gallup, liking what you do each day will have more of an impact on your overall health and wellbeing than anything else.  In other words, you can be eating all the kale in the world and running everyday but if you are unhappy with your job, that alone what kill you.  Gallup research also reveals that your boss has more of an impact on your health and wellbeing than your primary care physician.

You might be wondering why, as a health coach, I’m blogging about this, right?  And the reason is because I’ve had several clients come to me because they want to lose weight.  But the reason why they’re gaining weight in the first place is because they’re over eating at work to distract them from the unhappiness they feel at work and/or because they don’t know how to deal with an overbearing, unappreciative, and manipulative boss, for example.  So what ends up happening is 4-5 years later, they find themselves overweight, anxious and burned out.

There are several factors that contribute to the weight gain – not only overeating but when you’re in a constant state of toxic stress, your body naturally produces excessive cortisol which causes you to crave more sugar and fat and even worse, it also accelerates fat accumulation.

Interest enough, through my coaching, not only do I help my clients manage stress in an effective manner, I also end up helping them find a new job!

Today, I wanted you to hear straight from the expert regarding what to do when you’re in a situation where you know that your current work situation is not working for you but rather against you and how to take strategic action.

The amazing Rory Verrett, former NFL Executive Recruiter, Harvard graduate and founder of Protege Podcast and Partner at Protege Search shares so many nuggets of wisdom in my interview with him including:

– The 3 major signs you’re at a breaking point

– The 3 part test on how to identify when it’s time to activate a job search

– The 3 type of appointments you should be having on a monthly basis!

Fast forward to the 9 minute mark to hear what Rory shares – it’s gold!

There is a bit of echoing when I speak only, but please don’t let that stop you from listening to all that Rory shares and be sure to take notes!! It’s so GOOD

If you don’t want to listen to the entire interview (although I highly suggest you do) here are the main takeways:

The 3 + major signs you’re at a breaking point:

  1. If you are constantly dreading going to work and it causes you uncontrollable stress
  2. If you find yourself crying about something at work more than the once every 5 years
  3. if you’re finding yourself talking about the stress at work like it’s your hobby
  4. Other signs: weight gain, high blood pressure, etc.

When it’s time to activate a job search: 3 part test

  1. Ask yourself if you’re being paid fairly?
  2. Are you learning/ being stretched?
  3. Are you being treated fairly?

Rory suggests that if you have 1 of these then try to fix it.  If you have two of these then activate a job search and if you have all 3, definitely be looking and have an active job search.

3 type of appointments you should have every month:

  1. Networking with past colleagues
  2. Networking with a competitor
  3. Interviews with recruiters

It can be a coffee date, lunch or even a quick 20-30 minute catch up call.

The last thing you want is to go out on disability leave and get so sick that you can’t even function.  I always suggest to my clients that they take really good care of themselves first.  This means sleeping well, eating right, staying hydrated and managing stress effectively so that it doesn’t all get out of hand.  Leverage the resources your employer offers such as the Employee Assistance Program, seek therapy, learn how to “manage up,” and read about increasing resiliency.  You have an amazing life to live!  Yes, we know that your career is how you seek purpose but don’t let it get the best of you.  You matter!

Do you hate your job? Is it making you mentally, physically and emotionally sick? Tune in to learn what you can do about it. *** There is a bit of echoing when I speak only, but please don't let that stop you from listening to what Rory shares!!
